George A. Hernandez
Managing Director, Southwest
George arrived at UpMetrics having worked for 15 years in the afterschool space at various levels, including instructor, site coordinator, manager, director, and executive vice president. He spent almost 10 years with EduCare Foundation, and five years at various Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA locations. He received his B.A. at Whittier College, in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance and International Business.
George was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. His parents moved to Los Angeles when he was four years old.
"Los Angeles is my home," he says. "I have lived in various parts of the city, including South Central Los Angeles, Echo Park, North Hollywood, Whittier, and La Puente. I get excited about helping people get better at whatever it is they do. I connect right away with the idea of 'empowering" organizations. I want to be a partner in their growth and let their work shine."
Outside of work, George loves to play basketball: "I love to hoop. Basketball has been my sanctuary and was growing up. I was involved in a lot of after school activities but primarily sports. In high school, I was an assistant coach to my former elementary and middle school coach."
That's in part why he's found himself in this line of work. "I am an advocate of afterschool programs," he explains. "I stay connected to the afterschool community through serving on the California Department of Education, Expanded Learning Division, Policy Committee. I want to make sure that quality afterschool programs are available for all kids. I also like to volunteer with different organizations on career days for students of color. I like to mentor and let students know that it's important to take advantage of the opportunities available. I am a product of mentors, support, and opportunity."
